Before you publish

There’s nothing more off-putting when reading online content than bad punctuation, poor grammar and more spelling mistakes than a five-year-old’s diary.

Unfortunately, online content is littered with these mistakes. Even popular sites like the Mail Online have more than the odd typo.

So proofreading your online content is vital to showing that the content is professional and reliable. Here are some tips for proofreading your content quickly and effectively.

Give it time

If you are proofreading content that you have written, it’s important not to rush into it straight away after writing it.

Instead, give it an hour or two before coming back to it and reading it over. By doing this, you’ll be able approach it with a fresh set of eyes and read it more closely – therefore catching any of the smaller mistakes. After the first read, give it a few minutes then read it again – the chances are you’ll catch something you missed first time round.

The Publishing Process

Once you are ready to publish your content, follow these tips:

    • h1 tag/TitleTry and write a relevant, punchy, engaging title. You may use your target keywords, but do not shoe-horn them in.
    • Opening SentenceBe engaging, informative and to the point. Include relevant keywords, but again, do not shoe-horn phrases in if they do not fit.
    • H2 tagsThese can be used sparingly, but are good to break up the content on the page for the user. Ask questions, repeat phrases. This is where you can add relevant keywords and additional longtail phrases.
    • Metadata, including title, descriptions & keywordsYou should be able to download an SEO plugin for WordPress if you do not have an existing CMS etc.  Think about your keywords and call to action for descriptions.
    • Links to other related contentLink to at least one specific previous article on your blog/website. The top half of the article is ideal. Another link to a relevant article off-site, on a noteworthy website (eg. The Guardian, The BBC) can also be utilised. This is best added lower down the article.
    • A call to actionIf you have a product page then you can link to this internal page towards the foot of your article, with a relevant call to action. Mix up the anchor text you use.
    • Alt tags for imagesYou can use your overall keyword and/or the article title on this. Ensure that all images on your website highlight what your website is about and the main keywords.
    • Publish content under a Google+ ProfileGoogle+ Authorship markup is great for publishers. Create a profile and publish content under this profile.
    • A place to commentActivate comment sections on your website.
    • An invitation to shareInstall sharing tools making it easy for readers to share the content.
